European School - Europe in a Dutch Village

In 2013 the European School Bergen celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. "This is not just a European School but Europe-in-a-school," said director Steve Lewis in his speech to the Queen Beatrix. The school has students from fifty countries and provides lessons in seventeen native languages, on location and via distance learning with teachers elsewhere. The European School Bergen is the only European School in the Netherlands.

Expats who settle in North Holland can rest assured that this school provides high-quality, cost-effective education that will encourage an enthusiasm for languages in their children and familiarize them with European values and culture to help them become well-rounded adults.

The curriculum places a particular emphasis on languages and the sciences, but it also covers music, art, and sports. The school is relatively small and personal, with about 600 students. "This is a school community with so much positive energy; with so many friendly, caring, happy and talented students, teachers and other staff; and such supportive parents," said Lewis in his 2013 speech. This unique school provides custom education for children from Europe and beyond at the level of pre-university education. At the end of their final year of secondary school, the students take their examinations for the European Baccalaureate. This diploma is recognized throughout the European Union and in many other countries. The school has three language sections, meaning the majority of classes are offered in each of the following languages: English, French, and Dutch.

Encourage young people

The mission statement says it all: "The European School Bergen provides a languages-rich, differentiated, all-round quality education from kindergarten to university entrance culminating in the European Baccalaureate for the children of employees at the Joint Research Centre Petten and the Dutch and international community. Beyond academic achievement we encourage young people to develop other skills as part of a caring community educated in an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect in a European model of education."

Preparation for adult life

The European School Bergen started in 1963 with five students, one director, and three teachers. The school grew so quickly that at one point it was even necessary to hold classes in the hallways! Since the opening of the new building in 1978, we have had plenty of space for all our students - including Dutch children from the local area. Many students travel from Amsterdam and other areas every day to attend school here. Admission is open to everyone, although the school does charge tuition fees.
